Greetje Verboven, fellow founder of the NGO No Péga Môn, recites:
"Thanks to a friend from Senegal, who spent years as the ambassador in Bissau, we became acquainted with the area, and started to appreciate it. Initially, we went over as tourists, but already during our first visit we were struck by the high needs of the local population. We started building a nursery and primary school in the village of Bubaque (on the isle of Bubaque) and supplied school equipment and money for Christmas and Easter celebrations for the pupils.
Our enthusiasm proved to be contagious for our direct surrounding and two befriended couples joined our journey. Because we are still professionally active and hence can only go there twice a year, we acknowledged the necessity of daily government, existing of people from the actual islands. They know best what is needed most. To make all of this official, we decided to found a "fondacão", which, after thorough consideration, became an NGO."
